The article discusses the current problems of spiritual and moral education of convicts in Russia. A theoretical and legal analysis of the provisions of the category of legal awareness of convicts is given, since in conditions of isolation of a person from society, there is a tendency to deform legal awareness. The article describes the directions of spiritual and moral education of convicts in places of deprivation of liberty. It is concluded that the activities of the assistants to the heads of regional departments of the Federal Penitentiary Service in organizing work with believers should be comprehensive and orient all involved clergy to its implementation. The program of their activities should emphasize the regional aspect of the functioning of the territorial body of the Federal Penitentiary Service and take into account significant events in the country.
