The article examines the aspects contributing to the formation of sustainable motivation of employees of the management system for professional self-development: the relationship between internal and external motivation, setting goals and achieving them, personal and psychological characteristics of employees contributing to successful professional activity. The main focus is on the professional self-development of a penal system employee. The subject of the study is the actual personal and psychological qualities of a penal system employee as a professional and the factors contributing to their further successful formation and development. The main task is to show the relationship between the development of professionally important qualities and motivation for service, as well as qualitative changes taking place in the structure of an employee's personality during the period of service. The identification of patterns of development of personal and psychological characteristics contributes to the expansion of understanding of the peculiarities of the formation of the personality of a penal system employee in the system of official and professional activity. The relevance of a detailed consideration of the complex of professionally important qualities of an employee is due to modern qualitative changes taking place in the penal enforcement system of Russia. There are trends in building an integrated approach to the formation of professionally successful employees in the areas of professional activity. Psychological diagnostic methods are the basis for the formation of the evidence base of the study, which allows us to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of the data obtained.
